How do European television networks deal with immigration and ethnic minorities in their countries? Which programmes are specifically aimed at these groups? How are such issues presented in mainstream programming, given that parts of European society seem to be turning increasingly towards racism and xenophobia?
These and many other questions are addressed in this English revised and updated version of the acclaimed French book, edited by Claire Frachon and Marion Vargaftig. European Television: Immigrants and Ethnic Minorities is divided into two main sections. The first brings together a selection of writings by British and French experts in the media and on immigration issues. The second part deals with the policies of Europe's burgeoning public and private television companies, and the programmes they make about minority communities.
Fourteen European countries are covered, including Hungary and the Czech and Slovak Republics. Documentary dossiers provide pertinent background information on broadcasts ranging from nation-wide current affairs and documentary programmes to local and regional magazine shows.

Claire Frachon is an independent television producer and consultant. Marion Vargaftig produces and organises exhibitions and conferences on a wide range of cultural issues.
