In April 1996, the Internationalises Zentralinstitut
für das Jugend- und Bildungsfernsehen (IZI) held an international
conference which presented a selection of noteworthy educational
programmes produced by European television stations that had been accepted
by a larger audience as being 'interesting' or 'instructive'. Issues of
the acceptance and uses of such programmes were discussed in the light of
the latest results of programmes and audience research. Research experts
were asked to focus on the following aspects:
- viewers attitudes towards television and their expectations of it as a
medium for education and learning;
- programme interests and preferences that go beyond entertainment, sport or
- image and acceptance of educational programmes;
- types of viewers and users, differences in information processing and
learning styles and their influence on television viewing behaviour.
Manfred Meyer is Deputy Head of IZI.
